Atelier Negri was born in Cremona in 2001, a city where craftsmanship and music have been inseparable for centuries. At that time, the name Negri was already well established, with over twenty years of experience dedicated to the design and production of fine violin cases—objects created to protect exceptional instruments while honoring their identity and value.
In 2001, this close relationship with musicians evolved into something more direct and personal. Negri opened its first violin shop in Piazza Zaccaria, in the very heart of Cremona, facing the historic Duomo. It was a natural step: from protecting instruments to selecting, understanding, and offering them to musicians from around the world. Just one year later, a second shop followed on Corso Garibaldi, directly opposite the house of Antonio Stradivari, today one of the city’s most emblematic museums. Few locations could better express a sense of continuity with Cremona’s violin-making heritage.
Within the Negri shops, violins crafted by Italian luthiers from across the country were offered—each instrument chosen for its character, balance, and musical potential. Yet over time, a question began to take shape in the mind of Luis Negri, founder of the brand: how could one create a violin that remained true to Italian spirit and sound, while being genuinely accessible to young musicians?
The answer gave rise to the first Atelier Negri violins, conceived in Cremona itself. The concept was simple, yet visionary. European instruments—crafted in the white in European countries—would be carefully finished in Italy. This approach made it possible to offer instruments of high musical value at competitive prices, without sacrificing personality, durability, or performance.
A defining element of Atelier Negri instruments lies in their finishing process. The violins are built in the white outside Italy, in strict accordance with Italian specifications, ensuring precision, structural integrity, and consistency from the very first stages of construction. They then arrive in Italy, where a decisive transformation takes place. In our Italian workshop, each instrument is varnished, set up, and carefully voiced. Thicknesses are refined when necessary, responding to the nature of the wood and the musical potential of each violin. This phase is not merely technical; it is interpretative. It is here that balance, response, and musical identity are shaped. For this reason, a fundamental part of every Atelier Negri violin is entirely Italian.
This process allowed, for the first time from Italy, the creation of study instruments with true character—violins capable of accompanying young musicians through years of growth and artistic development. Until then, such instruments were largely sourced from France or Germany.
Nearly twenty-five years later, Atelier Negri continues this journey from its current base in Frascati, in the Castelli Romani. The philosophy remains unchanged. Each instrument is still finished in our ateliers, ensuring a sound and feel that are unmistakably Italian.
Every violin is delivered with a certificate of authenticity, reinforcing its originality and long-term value. More than instruments, Atelier Negri violins represent a belief: that quality should be attainable, that tradition can evolve without losing its soul, and that the spirit born in Cremona can continue to inspire generations of young musicians around the world.
